Norway has contributed to improving women’s rights in Haiti for many years, with special focus on combatting sexual and gender based violence (SGBV). In line with the UN Security Council resolution 1325 on women, peace and security, a Norwegian police team is working within the peace operation MINUSTAH. Following the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, the Norwegian government deployed – for the first time – a specialized police team, specialized on SGBV issues. This team has for six years contributed to capacity building in the Haitian National Police in relation to SGBV crimes.
How is the Norwegian police effort in Haiti contributing to fighting against SGBV? How does this effort feature within the UN peace operation, MINUSTAH? How is the situation in Haiti today with regards to SGBV, and what is happening on this issue?
