Maternal and newborn health in Ghana

Cheryl A. Moyer, PhD, MPH has been working with colleagues in Ghana for more than a decade in an attempt to unpack the complex social, cultural, and clinical issues surrounding maternal and neonatal health.

In this lecture Dr. Moyer will describe both qualitative and quantitative findings across several studies in Ghana, including:

1. A qualitative study exploring perceptions of how women are treated during labor and delivery at facilities in northern Ghana.
2. A study of pregnant women’s preferences for (and against) social support during delivery in southern Ghana.
3. A mixed methods approach to implementing “social autopsies” to determine the social and cultural factors that impact maternal and neonatal deaths in four districts across the northern part of Ghana.

Dr. Moyer is the Director of the University of Michigan’s African Social Research Initiative, and she is Associate Director of Global REACH at the University of Michigan Medical School. She is also an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Learning Health Sciences and Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Michigan.
