A joint initiative between the University of Bergen
and CMI – Chr. Michelsen Institute
Stein Tønnesson, Research Professor, The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).
Stein Tønnesson, who has just returned from Yangon, will talk about the Rohingya tragedy in Myanmar.
Who are the Rohingya?
Why does Aung San Suu Kyi refuse to call them by their chosen name?
What characterises the triangular relationship between the Rohingya movement, the Union government and Army (Tatmadaw), and Rakhine Buddhist nationalism?
Is State Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi or Senior General Min Aung Hlaing – or both – responsible for the atrocities committed against the Rohingya?
Why are perceptions of the events surrounding the Rohingya exodus to Bangladesh so widely different in Myanmar and Western media?
Is reconciliation possible?
These are some of the questions he will discuss.
