A joint initiative between the University of Bergen
and CMI – Chr. Michelsen Institute
A panel discussion with (tbc*) Catalina Vallejo, Esmeralda Colombo, Nicolas Orago, Conrado Hubner Mendez/Danielle Rached, Jørn Øyrehagen Sunde, Cesar Rodrigues-Garavito (Skype) .
We see a growing number of court cases where children challenge the state for not acting responsibly to secure their (and future generations’) rights to a healthy environment. Most of the cases have been lodged before courts in the USA but we also see it in other parts of the world. In Colombia, for example, a landmark judgement was handed down by the Supreme Court in April 2018. The panel discussion aims to answer the following questions: Are children lodging these cases really active participants or mere symbols? And what is the likelihood of winning these cases- and of having real world effects?
