Back to Bolsonaro or another term for Lula?
Will Brazil swing back to Bolsonarism this autumn? Brazilians head for the polls on October 4th, and two presidential candidates steal most of the attention.
Incumbent Lula da Silva competes for a fourth non-consecutive term as the country’s president. His main competitor is Flávio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro – now convicted on attempted coup and serving prison time.
Our panel will discuss the upcoming election, both the presidential and the less-covered local and legislative elections, as well as the recent supreme court scandal – and position this year’s Brazilian election in a larger context.

José Zurita-Tapia is a PhD Candidate in Comparative Politics at UiB.
Zurita-Tapia researches pre-electoral coalitions in Latin America. Among his research interests are political parties, executive studies and executive-legislative relations. He holds a BA in International Relations from USFQ, Ecuador and a MA in Comparative Politics from FLACSO, Ecuador. He is the deputy Director of the Ecuadorian Association of Political Science (AECIP), and a member of the Executive Committee of ALACIP Youth Section (ALACIP Joven).
Sofia Rolim

Sofia Rolim is a PhD candidate at the Department of Government, UiB, and at the São Paulo Faculty of Law, FGV.
Sofia is a researcher at the Center of Law and Political Economy (NUDEP FGV) and LawTransform (UiB/CMI), as well as a collaborating researcher at the Center for Political Institutions and Social Movements (Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning – CEBRAP). She researches state violence, autocratization, and social movements in Latin America, with a focus on Brazil.
