Climate Change Lawfare

In what is know as “Klimasøksmål Arktis” a coalition of climate activists has gone to court to challenge the Norwegian governments policies to start oil drilling in the Arctic, based on the Constitution’s §112, which obliges the government to protect the environment also for future generations. Activists elsewhere are doing the same. But are courts and law good spaces for moving climate policies?

To discuss this we have assembled great team:

Nnimmo Bassey, the Nigerian climate activist, poet and architect who previously was the chair of Friends of the Earth International (2008-12), and who in 2012 received the Rafto Prize for his work on climate change and human rights.

Truls Gulowsen, Chair of Greenpeace Norway, who is one of the litigants in Klimasøksmål Arktis

Catalina Vallejo, PhD candidate at Los Andes University in Bogota, who writes her dissertation on the use of law in struggles for climate change policies

Siri Gloppen, LawTransform Director with experience from comparative research on climate change lawfare, will lead the debate.

The seminar is a collaboration between the Rafto Foundation and LawTransfrorm.
