How are Romani children subject to segregation in the Czech Republic and how is this issue of human rights being addressed?
Photo: Taylor Flowe / Unsplash Segregation in Czech education is a complex issue. Romani children are disproportionally placed in special schools and institutions, and are concentrated at high proportions in selected primary schools.
Both of these developments are closely related to living in social exclusion and segregation in housing.
Join us for this event on the developments and consequences of segregation in Czech education from the 1990s to the present. Are there examples of good practice, and what are possible solutions?
In particular, the lecture will look at how the Office of the Ombudsman has been involved in addressing this human rights issue.

Dr. Ducarre has studied law and international relations in France and in the UK and holds a master’s in law
with specialization in Children Rights. Before completing her PhD, she worked as a legal
consultant and writer.
Kari Hagatun
Associate Professor, UiB
Kari Hagatun is an Associate Professor at the Department of Education at the University of Bergen.
Professor Hagatun received her PhD from the University of Bergen in 2021 and is specifically interested in Roma children’s educational experiences in Norway. She has a master’s degree in pedagogy, as well as education and extensive experience as a general teacher.

Jan Skrobanek is a Professor at the Department of Sociology at the University of Bergen.
Prof. Skrobanek’s research interests include ethnic identity, discrimination and ethnicization, agency, mobility and/or employment as well as developments of transition patterns of vulnerable youth in a global perspective.
