Welcome to a week of public, multi-disciplinary discussions on law and lawfare.

Bergen Exchanges is an annual meeting place for scholars and practitioners from across the globe who seek to understand how law serves as an instrument of change – and how it shapes and is shaped by power relations.

The focus areas for this year’s conference is Democracy, autocratisation and resistance and Indigenous peoples and the law: climate and colonialism. 

Themes for roundtables and lectures on Democracy, autocratisation and resistance:

  • Rights activism in repressive contexts
  • Autocratisation: economic and legal underpinnings
  • Corrupting democracy
  • Institutional Changes for Democratic Dialogue
  • Protest and civil disobedience as democratic participation
  • Artificial intelligence, autocratisation and democracy
  • Gendered autocratisation
  • New threats to academic freedom

Themes for roundtables and lectures on Indigenous peoples and the law:

  • Contestations over land in plural legal regimes
  • Art and law in indigenous political mobilization
  • Decolonialising climate transformation
  • Transnational legal mobilization for indigenous rights
  • Beyond human rights
