Welcome to a U4 seminar on how to achieve universal health coverage and advance global health security.

Resources lost to bribery, embezzlement, rent-seeking, and other forms of corruption result in weaker health systems. It compromises the availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality of health services, and ultimately threatens people’s lives. The prevalence of corruption in health systems moves us further away from achieving Universal Health Coverage, and in times of health emergencies, compromises global health security.
On 2 November 2023, the U4 Anti-Corruption Resource Centre will host a seminar to debate these issues with seven experts in the fields of health and anti-corruption.

Jillian Clare Kohler's research focuses on global access to essential medicines. More specifically, she focuses her research on issues that are linked to anti-corruption, transparency and accountability in the pharmaceutical sector, as well as those related to trade issues and intellectual property rights.

Dr. Vian is a public health scholar and academic leader whose work is guided by the belief that all people have the right to access quality health care without having to experience financial hardship. She is dedicated to practice-based teaching and the development of emerging public health leaders eager to work with communities to address the underlying social determinants of health.

Everd is Ugandan Professor of Public Health and Associate Dean of the School of Medicine at Kabale University. He is a medical doctor (MBChB) with a PhD in Health Systems Research and a Masters degree in Public Health (MPH). He has also been a frontline clinician and district health services manager in Uganda, Health Systems Technical Advisor in Uganda, Rwanda and Malawi, researcher, health project manager, and trainer in Uganda, Rwanda and Italy.

Jonathan leads the work of the Global Health Programme, and joined the programme in 2019. Jonathan’s background is in public health, and he has extensive experience of working in with governments, civil society organisations and the private sector in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa on health systems strengthening, and on improving the quality of care.

Pallavi Roy is a Reader in Political Economy at the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy at SOAS. She is currently the Co-Director of the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) £6 million Anti-Corruption Evidence (ACE) research partnership consortium working primarily in Bangladesh and Nigeria, as well as several other developing countries.

Nicholas is a postdoctoral researcher at the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science working on topics in health policy, transparency, research integrity, and open science. Nicholas completed his DPhil in the department in 2022 as a Naji Foundation Scholar based at Kellogg College.
