Sylvia Tamale (Makerere University)
This year’s annual lecture on law and social transformation at the Bergen Exchanges will be given by professor Sylvia Tamale. Time and place will be confirmed, and the event will be streamed.
Prof.
Sylvia Tamale (Makerere University) is a leading African feminist lawyer, sociologist and human rights activist. She has won prizes and awards for defending human rights of marginalised groups such as women, sex workers, homosexuals and refugees. Her research interests include gender, law & sexuality, feminist jurisprudence and women in politics. In 2004, Prof. Tamale became the first female dean of Makerere University Law School. She has been a visiting professor at the African Gender Institute of the University of Cape Town and a visiting scholar at the University of Wisconsin. Prof. Tamale has served on the boards of the Uganda HIV/AIDS Alliance, the Global Commission on HIV and the Law, and the International Council on Human Rights Policy.
The Bergen Exchanges is an annual event taking place in Bergen in August each year organised by
Centre on Law & Social Transformation (LawTransform) – a network of scholars, students and practitioners who share an interest in how law shapes societies, and the use of rights and courts as tools for social change.
