Kerry R. Chance (UiB) in conversation with Ingvild Skage (UiB)
Kerry Chance has just released her new book:
Living Politics in South Africa’s Urban Shacklands (2017). This book provides a unique insight into post-apartheid social movements in South Africa. While much has been written on this topic, most discussions center on ideal forms of movements, disregarding the reality and agency of the activists themselves. In Living Politics, the author radically flips the conversation by focusing on the actual language and humanity of young post-apartheid activists rather than the external, idealistic commentary of old.
Kerry Ryan Chance is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen, and a Non-Resident W.E.B Du Bois Fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. Dr. Chance is the author of Living Politics in South Africa’s Urban Shacklands, published with the University of Chicago Press, as well as multiple scholarly journal articles, most recently in Cultural Anthropology, Social Analysis, and Anthropological Quarterly.
Ingvild Skage is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Department of Comparative Politics, UiB, and the coordinator of Centre on Law and Social Transformation. Her research interests include democratization, political parties, clientelism, social movements, urban poverty, and human rights, with an emphasis on LGBT-rights. Her empirical focus is on sub-Saharan Africa.
